the 1970s

I had two main sources of music when I was a child. Ronnie, my oldest sister, had a good collection of 45 vinyl records. Also, there was AM radio. Some people had 8 track players in their cars, but it wasn’t as common as you’d think. The lucky houses had massive stereo systems with LPs that didn’t skip too much. The 70s was a good time to be alive.

When I was five years old or so, I genuinely thought my uncle Richie was the singer of “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” and “Kiss and Say Goodbye”. I remember being at my grandma’s and asking my sister if he was. One of the songs was on the radio and I remember going to the kitchen and asking my uncle, “Do you sing this song?” I’ll never forget it. Everyone laughed. It was a funny moment.

My sister used put her initials on her 45 records. I still remember much of the collection she had.

There was a lot of soul music in the house growing up, but that’s not all we listened to. I happened to like the music of BJ Thomas a lot.

I was a big fan of the Carpenters
